Bing Places for Business in 2026: What It Really Does for ChatGPT and Copilot Local Answers
The new Bing for Business dashboard, the Google import, and what's verified vs hype about AI search visibility

Bing Places for Business is Microsoft's free listing for Bing Search and Maps, now managed at bing.com/forbusiness. You can import your Google Business Profile in minutes. It's a reasonable bet for Copilot, but tests suggest ChatGPT reads Bing's web results, not your Bing Places profile, so it helps ChatGPT only indirectly.
Key takeaways
Microsoft moved Bing Places for Business from bingplaces.com to bing.com/forbusiness on October 3, 2025 (Microsoft Bing Blog).
Microsoft describes Bing Places for Business as a free platform for appearing in Bing Search and Maps (Microsoft Bing Blog).
Once synced, conflicting Google data overwrites Bing Places edits, regardless of which was updated most recently (Microsoft Bing Places support, 2023).
In Search Engine Land's side-by-side tests, ChatGPT's local answers drew on Bing web results and did not simply repeat Bing's local listings (Search Engine Land).
Microsoft lists deeper Bing Places integration with Copilot as a future plan that hasn't shipped yet (Microsoft Bing Blog).
Methodology: In October 2026 we reviewed Microsoft's Bing Places announcement and support answers, OpenAI Help Center pages, Microsoft's Copilot documentation, and reports from Search Engine Land, Near Media, Search Engine Roundtable, Whitespark and Local Search Forum. Links were rechecked on October 15, 2026.
You already have a Google Business Profile, and now someone tells you, "ChatGPT uses Bing, so you need Bing Places." Is that another listing to babysit, a sync that wrecks your info, or just SEO hype?
When I went through Microsoft's own Q&A threads and the agency forums for this post, the same worries kept coming up: duplicates, sync overwrites and missing data. Short version: set it up, check it by hand, and skip the hype.
What changed in Bing Places for Business (Oct 2025 to 2026)
Bing Places for Business moved to a new Bing for Business dashboard at bing.com/forbusiness in October 2025, and the rollout had real bugs, so older listings are worth rechecking. Microsoft launched it on October 3, 2025. The big changes:
New home. The domain moved from bingplaces.com to bing.com/forbusiness. On October 15, 2026, bingplaces.com still returned a permanent (301) redirect there.
Automatic migration. Existing listings moved over; old logins redirect.
Faster Google import. Microsoft says the new flow is "faster, more reliable, and better at preserving key attributes like business name, hours, and contact details."
Recommendation Tool for missing photos, links, hours and category-specific items.
Dashboards and bulk editing, per Search Engine Journal and Search Engine Land.
Before launch, Microsoft warned (via Search Engine Roundtable) that "bulk upload, bulk review, and editing your G-synced listings may not be available at the time of migration." On launch day, agencies in Local Search Forum started reporting missing listings and lost hours, categories and descriptions, though some said their listings came back a few days later.

Does ChatGPT use Bing Places? What's verified vs hype
ChatGPT uses Bing for web results, but there's no evidence it reads your Bing Places profile directly. Your ChatGPT local business listing, in effect, is whatever Bing's web results say about you.
OpenAI's Help Center says ChatGPT search "sometimes partners with other search providers" and may share general location with "trusted third-party providers" for "nearby business listings." It doesn't name that provider. The Enterprise and Edu page names Bing for web results.
In Search Engine Land, Damian Rollison compared local searches in ChatGPT and Bing. The results overlapped a little, with plenty of differences. When questioned, ChatGPT said it runs a Bing search, reads 20 to 30 web results, and doesn't see Bing Places profile data.
One caveat, which Rollison flags himself: part of that evidence is ChatGPT describing itself. At Near Media, Greg Sterling got the same answer and wrote, "We probably can't take that at face value."
LocalPanda's Bing Places AI Evidence Tracker (updated October 2026)
Claim | Status | Source |
|---|---|---|
ChatGPT search uses Bing | Verified for web results | |
ChatGPT reads your Bing Places profile directly | Not supported by tests; not documented | |
ChatGPT repeats Bing's local pack | False in side-by-side tests | |
A Bing listing helps ChatGPT indirectly | Plausible, via Bing organic rankings | |
ChatGPT uses Bing Places at all | Unclear |
Status judgments are LocalPanda's assessment, based on our October 2026 review of OpenAI and Microsoft documentation and independent tests.
"Bing Places isn't a ChatGPT switch. It's one input into the web results ChatGPT reads."
So for a dentist or a personal injury lawyer, ChatGPT visibility still comes down to your website, public reviews, the directories you're in and any local press you've earned.
Copilot and Bing local results
A complete Bing listing is the reasonable bet for Copilot, though Microsoft hasn't documented that Copilot's local answers use Bing Places data. Here's what is documented.
Microsoft's Microsoft 365 Copilot Chat support page, which covers the work version, says Copilot sends a short generated query to Bing. As for how consumer Copilot sources local results, Microsoft hasn't said.
Search Engine Roundtable spotted Copilot Answers in Bing showing a map plus local listings in February 2025.
Microsoft's launch post lists "deeper integrations with Bing Maps and Copilot" under What's Next, which makes it a plan for now.
Bing's ranking guidance, quoted by Whitespark, says "Bing Local results are retrieved from our Bing Local database," which Bing Places feeds.
To show up in Copilot local results: verify your Bing listing, fill every field (categories, hours, services, photos), and keep your website ranking in Bing. Then test with the prompts below.
Step by step: set up or claim your listing in 15 minutes
Claiming or importing takes about 15 minutes. Publishing takes longer: Microsoft's guidance says each verification or edit starts a publish cycle that "normally lasts around ten days."
Heads-up: the verification, import and publishing details here come from pre-2025 Microsoft guidance (a 2023 Bing Places support answer written before the new dashboard). We couldn't find a newer version, so trust your dashboard.
Search first. Step one in how to get listed on Bing Maps: search Bing Maps for your name and city, and if a listing exists, claim it.
Sign in at bing.com/forbusiness. Use an account the business will keep.
Import or claim. If your Google profile is clean and verified, import your Google Business Profile to Bing; it's the fastest route. If Google is messy, fix it first, because bad data imports just as fast.
Handle Bing Places verification. Per that 2023 answer, Google-verified listings are verified automatically after sync, as long as address information is available. Otherwise expect a PIN.
Fix categories by hand. The same answer says categories are "not imported, as these are different in GBP."
Upload photos by hand. Microsoft doesn't document whether photos transfer. One guide says they don't.
Check the phone number. Phone isn't mandatory on Google, so it may not import.
Confirm it's active. Look for Published/Active status, then find yourself on Bing Maps. Batch your edits so you don't restart the publish cycle.
Expect to fix a few things after the import.

Google sync rules to know before you import
Once Bing Places is synced with Google, Google is the source of truth and conflicting Google data overwrites your Bing edits. Microsoft's Bing Places support specialist laid out the rules in a 2023 Microsoft Q&A answer:
If listings are matched, Google data overwrites the Bing Places listing.
"Changes made to a Bing Places listing will be overwritten by conflicting changes in GBP, regardless of which was updated most recently."
You can't update Google from Bing.
Automatic syncs run weekly, biweekly or monthly.
I read that second rule twice; it's the line I'd want every owner to see before clicking import. Make your edits in Google and let them flow to Bing. Other reports worth knowing:
UTM tags get replaced. An agency in Local Search Forum said its Bing UTM links kept being swapped for Google's.
Imports can create duplicates. In a September 2026 Microsoft Q&A post, a user said a Google import created a second listing instead of linking to the existing one, and a Microsoft moderator pointed them to Bing Places support.
Hidden addresses can break. In an August 2026 Microsoft Q&A post, a service-area business that hides its address on Google said the import left the address blank and placed the listing roughly 30 miles away. Location and category stayed locked after sync was disabled.
Does Bing copy Google's hide-address setting? We couldn't find an official answer, so check yours by hand. For the Google side, see how to set up a service-area business on Google.
Bing Places vs Google Business Profile
Feature | Bing Places | Google Business Profile |
|---|---|---|
Where you manage it | Your Business Profile, edited from Google Search or Maps (Google) | |
Ranking factors | Relevance, distance, popularity (Bing, via Whitespark) | Relevance, distance, prominence (Google) |
Reviews | Shows third-party reviews such as Yelp, Tripadvisor and Facebook (Whitespark) | Native Google reviews you can reply to (Google) |
Service-area address | Valid address required for verification; hiding it is optional (Whitespark) | Must hide it if you don't serve customers there (Google) |
Sync | Imports from Google; Google wins conflicts (Microsoft) | Not affected by Bing edits; it's the source Bing syncs from (Microsoft) |
Example: a plumber's Bing listing checklist
A service-area plumber needs a verified address on file, a hidden public address, real service areas and hand-added photos. The same checklist works for HVAC and landscaping crews.
Before import
Google profile verified, name matches signage (no "Best Plumber Near Me")
One business phone, same everywhere
Bing Maps searched for duplicates
During setup
Import or claim the existing listing
Primary category set by hand (e.g. Plumbers)
Real address on file, hidden if customers don't visit
Service areas you actually serve
Website link goes to your own site
Hours, including emergency or 24/7 if true
After publish
Listing shows Active
Map pin is in the right town
Photos: van, team, a finished job
Phone and website click-tested on mobile
Reminder to recheck after each sync
If you're a dentist or law firm with a real office, skip the hide-address step.
How to check if ChatGPT and Copilot recommend you
The only reliable way to know is to run real customer prompts monthly and record who gets named and cited, because AI answers shift.
Pick prompts your customers would actually use (below).
Run each in ChatGPT and Copilot with your city included, and record whether you're mentioned and which sources get cited.
Run the same queries on Bing and note the top 20 to 30 web results, the pool Search Engine Land's test says ChatGPT works from.
10 prompts to test if ChatGPT and Copilot recommend you
1. Who's the best emergency plumber in [city]?
2. I need a 24-hour plumber near [neighborhood]. Who should I call?
3. Recommend an HVAC company in [city] that services heat pumps.
4. Which furnace repair companies in [city] have good reviews?
5. What's the best landscaping company in [city] for a backyard redesign?
6. Who does lawn care and spring cleanup in [town]?
7. Which family dentists in [city] are accepting new patients?
8. Is there an emergency dentist open on Saturdays near [ZIP]?
9. Who's a well-reviewed personal injury lawyer in [city]?
10. Recommend an estate planning attorney in [city].
The cited sources are your to-do list. Doing this by hand gets old fast, which is the problem LocalPanda (localpanda.ai) built its AI search visibility tracking for. For the manual method, read how to track AI search visibility for a local business.
FAQ
Six common questions about Bing Places for Business, answered briefly with sources.
Is Bing Places free?
Yes. Microsoft calls Bing Places for Business "a free online platform".
Can I import my Google Business Profile into Bing?
Yes, from the new dashboard. Check categories, photos and phone afterward.
Why is my Bing Places analytics not showing data?
In a January 2026 Microsoft Q&A thread, a user with a published, Google-synced listing reported months of blank analytics; an independent advisor blamed the October 2025 migration. Check it's Active and on Bing Maps, check sync, then contact support. Microsoft hasn't said what the fix is.
Does ChatGPT use Bing Places?
Not directly, as far as public tests show. It appears to read Bing's web results, where your listing can help your site rank.
Will Bing Places Google sync overwrite my edits?
Yes. Per Microsoft's support guidance, conflicting Google data overwrites Bing changes "regardless of which was updated most recently."
Can service-area businesses hide their address on Bing Places?
Yes. Bing requires a valid address for verification but lets service businesses hide it, per Bing's guidelines as quoted by Whitespark. Whether Google's hidden-address setting syncs cleanly? No one's confirmed this.
Conclusion
Bing Places for Business is worth 15 minutes in 2026: it helps, but it won't get you into ChatGPT on its own.
It puts you on Bing Search and Bing Maps, it's the reasonable bet for Copilot, and it probably helps your website rank in the Bing results ChatGPT reads.
These days customers find you on Maps, in AI answers, on review sites and in directories, and they all need to say the same thing. The businesses that get named in AI answers tend to be the ones whose details match everywhere.
Set up Bing, keep Google as your source of truth, and check what's showing up. Juggling several profiles? LocalPanda (localpanda.ai) can keep your listings consistent across those surfaces (pricing).
